UPCCs provide same-day care for non-life-threatening urgent health concerns (sprains, minor burns, cuts needing stitches, ear infections, severe colds). Hospital Emergency Departments (ERs) provide 24/7 care for life-threatening conditions (chest pain, stroke symptoms, severe breathing difficulties, major trauma).
How are hospital ER wait times calculated in British Columbia?
Wait times represent the estimated duration from initial triage nurse assessment to being examined by a physician. Patients are seen based on clinical urgency (CTAS triage score), not order of arrival.
Do I need a BC Services Card / MSP to visit an Urgent Care Centre?
Residents should bring their BC Services Card / Personal Health Number (PHN). Visitors or non-residents can also receive urgent care, subject to out-of-province or non-resident billing fees.
